The author conducts a comparative analysis of the manager’s toolkit within a management system. The manager’s toolkit is a construct whose nature depends on the manager’s objectives, their philosophy, the specific characteristics of the system being managed, and the circumstances. It is a complex, open, diffuse, hybrid and variable collection rather than a subsystem. It is only against the backdrop of the management system as a whole that the systemic nature of the manager’s toolkit becomes apparent. (fragment of text)

This paper is an attempt to synthesise the epistemological knowledge concerning the enterprise management system (EMS) as a category. For this reason, as is only natural, we have made certain simplifications; some issues have merely been touched upon. We define a scientific cognitive problem as the difficulty of dealing with a state of scientific ignorance in a given field, and it is in this sense that we shall henceforth use the term. The thematic areas we have identified in order to better describe this perceived gap in scientific knowledge are:
1) the existing (if any) paradigm of scientific claims;
2) identifying the scope, content, extent and nature of the knowledge gap;
3) establishing the scientific nature of a given state of ignorance;
4) determining the relationship between the current state of knowledge and previous attempts to resolve it, as well as other scientific problems. [from the Introduction…]

The author’s aim was to assess the current state of cognitive scientific knowledge in the field of business management systems. In the author’s view, the significance of such a study stems from the belief that cognitive knowledge should be the primary source of normative information and management practice.
